On the Thursday Threesome, I’ll choose a theme and describe three things that have to do with that theme. I’ve been trying not to procrastinate, but who are we kidding, really? But this week worked out as I had completely forgotten that it’s Willy Shakespeare’s birthday today! So today, you shall be treated to my top three Shakespeare works, with many thanks to Shakespeare Online:
- The Sonnets: Initially, I was just going to point you to Sonnet 135, where Shakespeare has fun wordplay with his name, Will. Including, yes, that Will. But as I was scrolling down looking for the number, I saw the first line of Sonnet 130, and I remembered how much I liked that one too. Mostly, I’m a big fan of the Dark Lady sonnets…the last third or so. I like how Willy finally gained a sense of humor about love and relationships, which I greatly appreciate.
- Richard III: While I usually prefer the comedies, I will say that Richard III is hands down my favorite play. I first saw a production of it out at Hartford Stage, starring Richard Thomas. It was a bleak, leather, vynil, rusted metal setting, and Richard Thomas was positively terrifying. I loved it!
- The Taming of the Shrew: Funny how a great production will do wonders for your opinion of things… While I was in college in Ithaca, there was a great produciton of Shrew done at the Kitchen Theatre. This one was cross-cast, where the women’s roles were played by men, and the men’s roles were played by women. The effect was hilarious…as was the final monologue by Kate, done over the song, “Stand By Your Man.”

On the Thursday Threesome, I’ll choose a theme and describe three things that have to do with that theme. Next weekend, I shall be tripping off for a long weekend, which will also include a long 9-hour drive. Whee! Hopefully I’m not running around trying to get everything done at the last minute, but you are well warned if I disappear for the weekend. This Thursday is three places I’ve been, but want to go back:
- Ithaca NY: I got my BA at Ithaca College, and I knew the moment I walked into Dillingham Center (the theatre department) that that’s where I wanted to be. Of course, the view of Cayuga Lake with the fountains didn’t hurt. Plus, the city itself was a fantastic mix of small town/college town/every town, and I just fell in love with it. So even though the snow would routinely be over my head, I wouldn’t hesitate if you gave me a lake house there.
- Paris: Yes, I know this will probably be the chiche answer, but I only had 1 full day in Paris the time I visited. I did get to see the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, and the Tour Eiffel, but there’s so much more! Catacombs! Montmarte! Moliere’s grave!
- Bellagio (Las Vegas): And for my decadent answer, I would love to be a VIP out at the Bellagio. I used to work there, in the basement, which was still pretty swank. Oh, and I can tell you specificially what I would like there… To stay in one of the Villas, to go see O again, to eat at Sensi and Le Cirque, and have some crepes at Jean Phillipe. *sigh*

On the Thursday Threesome, I’ll choose a theme and describe three things that have to do with that theme. Currently, I’m having a pretty lousy week, what with receiving two really bad pieces of news on Tuesday. On a side note, if you can handle not getting more than one piece of really bad news in a day, I would recommend it. I’m still working on processing these changes.
But anyway! Comfort food is certainly in order.
- Pierogies: Pierogies are my newest favorite comfort food, introduced to me by John. What could be better? Starch-y dough surrounding starch-y potatoes that are mixed with cheese. The only thing I can think of that would be better would be making them myself. Which is high on my list of Life Goals.
- Spaghetti: This comfort food is very specific. It must be spaghetti, not some other kind of pasta. And the sauce must be my Dad’s sauce. There is just something so comforting about the actual action of twirling pasta, particularly as I am a little uncoordinated and have to twirl with a spoon and fork. And who doesn’t like their parents’ cooking best?
- Falafel: Since becoming a vegetarian, I’ve started experimenting more with food. One of my experimental trips was to the Falafel Palace in Cambridge. Soon after, John found a package mix of falafel that I could make at home. Thinking that it couldn’t be that difficult to make, I found a great recipe online that I’ve been using to make falafel from scratch.
