Making a Dash For It

Thursday Threesome: Alternatives

On the Thursday Threesome, I’ll choose a theme and describe three things that have to do with that theme. Since moving to the new house, I downgraded our cable subscription to Basic. I’m really only interested in getting the internet, and since our cable system doesn’t carry the NFL Channel, there wasn’t a reason to get a package. We’ve been watching far less tv now, which is easy for me, but Ethan sometimes needs some distractions. So, here are three alternatives to watching tv:

  1.  Eating dinner – This one works particularly at my house, and particularly during the week. Since we get home from school/work sometime between 6 and 6:30, we’re usually going straight into dinner. Which gets eaten at the table. Now we actually, *gasp*, talk to each other. Even though Ethan insists on sitting as far away as possible from me when I have “smelly stuff,” like balsalmic vinegar.
  2.  Going for a walk – One thing I love particularly about the new house is that it’s right by Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester. We are two blocks up from the park, which has the beach and a walking track on one side of the street, and a baseball diamond on the other. Last night, we took a walk to see if we could find ice cream nearby, and took in part of a high school baseball game. Unfortunately, the ice cream truck went into the park on the other side of the street, but that’s okay, since the baseball game had a snow cone truck.
  3. The Nintendo – When all else fails (or it’s raining outside), there’s the fallback of the Nintendo. Ethan’s taken over my DS, which he will play Lego Star Wars for hours if I let him. Or, he’s perfectly happy watching me play Mario Kart or the like on the Wii. Not the best avoidance of the television, but it’s at least a little more interactive, and does the trick in a pinch.

Cute Little Pain…

I’ve figured out (finally) why mothers take so many pictures of their babies asleep. It’s because they need to be reminded from time to time that they really are sweet and adorable, and you really shouldn’t strangle them. Not that it was a difficult weekend, but Ethan’s started having tantrums of epic proportions. I’ve been lucky to avoid them mostly thus far, but it’s kind of a pain that he’s started having them just as he’s gotten too big to have them.

But isn’t he cute? (Picture from January ’04)

W

A closeup picture of the W in the inscription. I actually worked on this picture first, then tried the same steps on the picture I posted yesterday. I think I will probably revisit these pictures in the future a bit, and do some research into why they are in the concrete outside my kitchen.

Specifically for my Dad, ’cause I know how much he liked the poster edges filter. This is the inscription in the concrete outside my kitchen door.

Purple Shadows

Some more purple flowers around my house, this time near the front door. I liked how the late afternoon sun was casting shadows, and tried to highlight that with (I believe) the Paint Daubs filter.

I didn’t realize until Thursday that on my Saturday photo walk, I think I took four different pictures of flowers and vines with this same curve. There’s just something so aesthetic about it.

Thursday Threesome: Excuses, excuses

On the Thursday Threesome, I’ll choose a theme and describe three things that have to do with that theme. Yikes! I didn’t realize it’s been so long since I’ve done one of these. So, appropriately, this week’s theme is excuses, particularly for those of use working in the digital age:

  1.  ”The server went down” - A classic digital excuse, but still tried and true with about half the population. Just make sure you are giving this excuse to someone who doesn’t know how to check a server’s status…or someone who isn’t friends with the IT Department.
  2.  ”The timestamp on my computer is wrong” – I like this one myself. I could use that one today, as usually my entries do go up at 8:00, and it’s a bit past that now. I do use a variation on that, in that I have a slim idea of where the WordPress headquarters are, because while my timestamp is currently set around 10:00…it’s around 1:00 in my time zone.
  3.  ”The mouse ate my homework” – Okay, I wouldn’t really try this one out. Though at least it’s easier to believe as there is actually a mouse connected to your computer…and it would be hard to explain what a dog was doing near your hard drive.

Purple Flowers

The caption for this one in the Gallery reads, “The real reason why I wanted this house…” There are so many purple flowers around it. This is a view down the stairs, with my porch behind the flowers.

Yellow Flower – Background

Oh goodness! She lives! I’m back online, and finally had a little time to work on some pictures. I went on a photo walk this weekend, and got some lovely flower pictures. For this one, I just wanted something new to have on my desktop at work. The full size is formatted for a 1440 x 900 screen.
